Sergiu Toma wins bronze at Paris Grand Slam
Judoka Sergiu Toma, the best Moldovan athlete in 2011, won the bronze medal at the Grand Slam Tournament in Paris, France, which ended on Sunday, February 5, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Toma competed in the 81kg weight category, where he bested Ukraine’s Vitali Dudcik, Canada’s Antoine Valois-Fortier and Japan’s Yuki Haruyama, but was defeated by eventual champion Ole Bischof from Germany in the semi-finals.
The result brought Toma another 120 points in the world rankings, based on which entries at the Olympics in London will be distributed. The Moldovan Judoka is ranked 11th, which grants him participation at the Olympics.
Other 3 Judokas defended Moldova’s colors at the tournament in France, but performed averagely. Ion Remarenco (90kg) was eliminated in the 1/8 finals, Victor Scvortov (73kg) won only the opening fight, while Igor Soroca (66kg) was defeated in the first fight. However, all three still have chances to qualify for the London Olympics.
