Situation of culture in Moldova worries new minister
The Moldovan Minister of Culture is lagging behind even the poorly developed countries, stated Minister Boris Focsa at a press conference on Friday. Talking about the state of affairs in the filed of culture, the minister said there is a multitude of problems inherited from the past government which necessitate urgent solutions.
“I have found that in the last 8 years there were committed numerous illegalities. There were empty words, and no concrete actions. There is no register to itemize our cultural patrimony. Many pieces of this patrimony were illegally privatized. Worrisome is also the state of museums, theaters and concert halls. Shortly, we will reorganize the minister, on all levels, because I often encountered accidental people here”, declared the minister.
Speaking of his priorities, the minister said: “Moldova still hasn't a law to protect movable and immovable patrimony. We'll set up a council to devise such a law. We'll discuss with the local authorities the issue of a number of precious monuments”.
“We will also try to resolve the issue of the Circus, currently a stock company, where 15 million lei was invested for renovation, but nothing has been done. Another monument with an uncertain fate is the She Wolf Feeding Romulus and Remus. Today it is somewhere at the Tractor Factory, cut into four pieces. Moreover, the firm that won the tender to renovate the monument is now seeking 100,000 lei from the Ministry”, he added.
Another issue highlighted at the conference was the state of theaters and concert halls and their role in society. The minister underlined that it must be realized that art should not just be created, but also sold.
“We should revise the prices for the play tickets. Each institution of this king has to have a valuable repertoire so as to attract people”
“We intend to create postgraduate courses destined for the directors or the artists who wish to occupy managerial posts in their institutions. They should learn how to earn money from their basic activity, as well”, said Boris Focsa.
As concerns the ministry's budget, Focsa said it would be revised and many costly projects, like the Caravel of Culture, would be cut.
