Smoker killed in fire blamed on burning cigarette
A 38-year-old man died from carbon monoxide poisoning in an apartment located on Lermontov St in Chisinau on February 23.
Dorina Cruc, spokeswoman for the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, told Info-Prim Neo that the neighbors smelt smoke and broke the door open. They found the body of the man in the bed destroyed by flames. It was established that the fire was caused by a burning cigarette.
Fifty-nine persons were killed in fires in Moldova this year. Dropped cigarettes are being blamed for half of the fires.
In order to prevent fires caused by smokers, the European Commission wants that only cigarettes with two or more thick paper strips be sold on the EU market from 2011 as they slow the burning process down and put them out when they are left in other places than the ash tray. Such cigarettes are already sold in Canada, Australia and a number of U.S. states.
