Smolensk accident is Poland's greatest tragedy in post-war history, Polish official

The accident in Smolensk is the most tragic event in Poland's post-war history, a huge loss for the Polish people, stated Martin Nosal, acting charge d'affaires at the Poland's Embassy in Chisinau, at a briefing organized by the Polish diplomatic mission on Tuesday, Info-Prim Neo reports. The representatives of the mission expressed their recognition to the Moldovan people and authorities for the support in these difficult times. According to Martin Nosal, the causes of the tragedy are not yet known, but he has assured that Poland remains a stable country, whose political forces have become unified after the tragedy. Martin Nosal added that the accident killed among others Poland's Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Kremer, who was also the co-chairman of the Moldo-Polish Forum for European Integration. The Embassy's staff announced that on Saturday and Sunday, at 2:00 PM, the movie theater Odeon will screen the film “Katyn”, which depicts the tragic events of 1940 when Soviet security forces executed over 22,000 Poles. Saturday's plane crash in Smolensk killed 96 people – 88 members of the Poland's delegation that was flying to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn events , plus 8 crew. The presidential TU-154 aircraft crashed after clipping tree-tops on landing. No one on board survived the crash. 48 bodies have been identified so far, with President Lech Kaczynski being identified among the first ones. His body is already in Poland, awaiting funerals that are to take place on Saturday, April 17. Lech Kaczynski will be buried next to his wife, Maria, who also died in the crash.
