A truckload of footwear and clothing estimated at over 1.6 million lei has been seized at the Giurgiulești border crossing. The Special Cases Prosecutor’s Office and the Customs Service opened an investigation, with the trucker released on bail.
The truck was stopped and thoroughly searched as it was known that it was involved in smuggling activity. The search revealed over eight thousand articles of clothing and over eight hundred pairs of footwear that lacked any documents. Some articles bore famous brands and their authenticity will be verified.
The investigation showed that the merchandise was being bought in Turkey and smuggled into Moldova mixed with legally transited goods. The size of the damage done to the state is yet to be established.
Smuggling is a criminal offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
