Strategy for strengthening interethnic relations approved

The Cabinet agreed on the strategy for strengthening the interethnic relations in Moldova for 2017 – 2027. One of the set objectives is to ensure the national minorities’ access to information and audiovisual programs in the mother tongues by encouraging persons that belong to other ethnic groups to set up and administer media outlets in the native language and private broadcasters to produce and broadcast programs in the languages of national minorities.

The state will ensure conditions for other language speakers to study and use the Romanian language, will promote the languages of national minorities and ethnic diversity in society and will facilitate intercultural dialogue. The set goals will be achieved gradually, in three stages. The costs will be covered with budgetary funds and financial assistance provided by development partners.

The national minorities in Moldova represent 23.8% of the population. Among these are Ukrainians (8.35% of the total population), Russians (5.9%), Gagauz people (4.3%), Bulgarians (1.94%), Romanies (0.31%) and others.
