Supreme Court of Justice president to become known in several weeks

During the first week of April, the Supreme Council of Magistrates will select a candidate for president of the Supreme Court of Justice that is to be examined by the legislative body, Info-Prim Neo reports. President of the Supreme Council of Magistrates Nicolae Timofti has told Info-Prim Neo that the decision will be taken in the first meeting that will be held after March 28, when the term in office of the current president Ion Muruianu expires. Four judges will compete for the post of president of the Supreme Court of Justice - Ion Muruianu, judge of the Supreme Court of Justice Constantin Gurschi, member of the Supreme Council of Magistrates Nicolae Timofti, and acting president of the Penal Board of the Supreme Court of Justice Raisa Botezatu. Judge of the European Court of Human Rights Mihai Poalelungi also applied for the post, but withdrew his candidacy on March 7. The president of the Supreme Court of Justice is named by Parliament within 30 days of the day the Supreme Council of Magistrates proposes the candidate. The legislative body can extend this term by 15 days if need be. The legislature can also reject the fielded candidate if there are incontestable proofs of the applicant’s incompatibility with the given post, that he had broken the law or that the legal procedures for selecting him were violated. In such a case, the Supreme Council of Magistrates is notified within 30 days. But if the Council puts forward the same candidate the second time, the MPs are obliged to accept him The post is held for a four-year period.
