Teacher Training University and Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office claim right over space

The State Teacher Training University “Ion Creangă” in a petition addressed to the country’s administration expresses its discontent with the intention to base the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office in a block of study of the university. In reaction, the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office said that the identified space is the most appropriate one and the university’s staff can be transferred to another building that is equipped with everything necessary for teaching and learning, IPN reports.

In the petition, the academic community of the university notes that the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office is insistently trying to occupy the university premises, although the Education Code clearly stipulates that “university autonomy consists in the right of the university community to organize and manage itself, to exercise academic freedoms without any interference”. “We consider that this action on the part of representatives of the law, who had to comply with all the national and international laws, is unacceptable,” says the petition.

The block of study located at 5 Yablochkin St, which was chosen by the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, houses the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Information Technologies. There are also the scientific laboratories of the university and the Faculty of Educational Sciences. The academic community disapproves of the forced eviction of students and professors from the laboratories built with considerable effort over several decades.

For its part, the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office noted that Parliament in 2016 and August 2023 adopted laws stipulating that the Government will provide the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office with headquarters. Over the past months, several options for the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office were considered. The building at 5 Gennady Iablochkin St was identified as “ideal for the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, given its area, location, inner courtyard, access for special vehicles, meeting rooms, offices and other conditions in terms of infrastructure and functionality of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office”.

The staff of the university can be transferred to the building situated opposite at 2/1 Gennady Yablochkin St, which is equipped with everything necessary to conduct university studies. Previously, the building housed the Faculty of Law and is now not used in state management, the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office said.
