Teachers in Chisinau will not get pay raises yet

The 20% increase in the salaries of the teachers working in Chisinau was again postponed. This time the suggestion was made by the Ministry of Finance, Info-Prim Neo reports. The proposal to examine the decision concerning the increase in teachers' salaries was submitted by the Communist faction at Thursday's meeting of the City Council. Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca said the decision cannot be yet adopted as the Ministry of Finance has objections. “One of the conditions imposed by the International Monetary Fund was to freeze the salaries in the budgetary system,” the mayor said. “We prepared the decision to raise the salaries, but it must be now reviewed. The Ministry of Finance proposes providing financial assistance to teachers, but not raising their salaries.” Councilor Oleg Onishchenko stressed that the Chisinau administration signed no agreement with the International Monetary Fund, while Valery Klimenko said the IMF does not help Moldova but postpones the implementation of important projects. Dorin Chirtoaca replied that the IMF's participation in the activity of a state is a guarantee of partnerships with other European investors. “The Fund is an auditor of the European states,” the mayor said, stressing that after the amount of financial assistance for teachers is calculated, the draft decision will be submitted to the Chisinau Council for approval.
