Telecommunication and Information Society Week in Moldova – 2010 launched

The fifth Telecommunication and Information Society Week in Moldova was opened on May 17 and will last by May 22. The Moldova e-Gov Summit 2010 themed “ICT for a Better Government” will be held as part of the week for the first time, Info-Prim Neo reports. 'The Government places the development of the ICT sector high on its list of priorities,” Information and Communication Technology Minister Alexandru Oleinic said at the official opening of the event. 2.700 million Moldovan people use mobile phone services, while 1.140 million people use fixed-line telephone services. “These figures gladden us, but compared with the European level, we have yet a lot to do. Therefore, the development of this sector in Moldova is very important,” Alexandru Oleinic said. Prime Minister Vlad Filat said the Government supports the building of an information society in Moldova and the extension of the circle of ICT users. “The information technology helps to significantly increase productivity in all the sectors of the economy and the quality of the social services,” the Premier said. The envelope with fixed stamp dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the setting up of the first telephone station in Chisinau was launched on May 17. There were issued 20,000 such envelopes with a nominal value of 1.20 lei. The Telecommunication and Information Society Day is marked in 198 countries on May 17.
