The Byk has turned into sewer
The Byk River has become a sewer, but the relevant bodies do not control its pollution by the economic entities working nearby, the president of the Chisinau Organization of the Ecologist Movement of Moldova Vladimir Garaba has told Info-Prim Neo.
Outside Chisinau, the Bac is empty. The riverbed is dry. The water in the Ghidighici lake accumulates only in winter and in small quantities. The river is on the verge of disappearance. In Anenii Noi district, the water in the river is extremely polluted, Vladimir Garaba said.
Other rivulets are also in danger of disappearing not because of the climate change or of new ecological processes, but due to the irrational use of the water resources and violation of the environmental legislation, ecologists say.
The bodies in charge check the quality of the water only once in three months and do not control the pollution sources. The car washes, filling stations, milk and meat processing companies profit from this. The water flow can no more dilute the liquid waste. The water is unfit for irrigation, not speaking about swimming or fish breeding, Garaba said.
The Chisinau Organization of the Ecologist Movement prepared a bill to remedy the situation of the Byk, but the Ministry of Ecology rejected it.
“We asked that the Parliament declare the area occupied by the Byk as ecological crisis zone, that the Government approve emergency measures to improve the environmental situation and management of the river’s water and that there is created a consultative water management body. If the authorities do not take steps, the state of the river will worsen. It could become a center of contagion for the population,” Vladimir Garaba said.
