The transmission system operators (TSO) of continental Europe have agreed to increase commercial capacity with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine by approximately 25% for the winter period of 2024-2025. According to ENTSO-E, this decision was made following the destruction of a significant number of power plants in Ukraine and the expected major electricity shortage during the winter season, IPN reports.
The Ministry of Energy announced that the results of the calculations have allowed for an increase in electricity export limits to 2,100 megawatts (MW), which is 400 MW more than the current capacity.
“This significant increase in export capacity represents a new sign of solidarity and strong support from the European community of transmission system operators for the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, which have been severely affected by the brutal war waged by the Russian Federation,” the press release stated.
The new export limit will take effect on December 1, 2024. Starting in March 2025, TSO will conduct monthly reassessments of the commercial potential between the EU, the Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine, adjusting it based on system needs and conditions.
