The residents of a block disconnected from power supply 6 years ago have picketed the Government building

The residents of a building on 73/2 Soroceanu Street, disconnected from power supply for overdue electrical bills, picketed on Friday, January 18, the Government building. The protest was staged by the organisation for consumers’ right protection “Salvgardare” (Safeguard). The president of the organisation, Maia Laguta, told Info-Prim Neo that protesters seek from the Government to immediately reconnect the building to power supply. Otherwise, the organisation, together with other NGOs, will make an appeal to European countries to deny access to Moldovan official delegates, Maia Laguta said, accusing the authorities of violating human rights and of discrimination. “While authorities speak of European standards, in the middle of Europe a 9-storeyed building has been illegally disconnected from power supply for 6 years now. In these five years, children have been born in darkness there”, the cited source said. The building was property of the Department Fund and was administered by the Clinical Hospital of Orthopaedics and Traumatology. According to the president of “Salvgardare”, the residents paid their bills, but the hospital did not transfer the money to the power supplier. Thus, the debts owed by the residents to the power distributor and to the water supplier rose to 208,000 lei and 104,000 lei, respectively. Maia Laguta stressed that, at the suppliers’ request, the court ordered the hospital to pay the debts. Afterwards, the decision was appealed in higher courts. Now, the case is examined by the ECHR.
