There is a need for a stroke patients’ association, academician

It is necessary to set up an association consisting of people who have suffered a stroke and their relatives, given that in 2018 there were 78 thousand follow-up patients in the Republic of Moldova. The members of this association, in fact those who undergo the rehabilitation process, could come up with summaries on patient’s quality of life or proposals on treatment strategies. The experience of European states regarding the activity of these associations was presented at "Stroke" European Summit, which takes place these days in Chisinau, IPN reports.

The event organized by the Stroke Association of Moldova, brings together the most prominent specialists from over 30 countries. One of the tackled topics was the European experience regarding the activity of associations of patients who had suffered a stroke. They could work as a public association. "Unfortunately, we have a big gap here, because there are no such associations. And we have gaps in the legislation, because there are no provisions that would give patients more facilities to help them improve their life quality,” says Stroke Association chair, academician and university professor Stanislav Groppa.

The academician explained the importance of such an association, given that in the country there are about 80 thousand people who have suffered a stroke, which constitutes about 3% of the population. According to Stanislav Groppa, it is vital to know the life style of these patients. And these associations could come up with the presentation of their concrete needs. The head of the Association is of the opinion that in this sense the experience of colleagues from abroad is very important, because they have such associations. At the same time, there is an international society, which includes national associations under the same umbrella.

At the event there has been also discussed the European registry of stroke patients. It allows the systematization of stroke types, the methodology of applying treatments, the comparison of results. Several hundred centers in Europe are involved in the development and systematization of this register. With this tool one can visualize the characteristics of the quality of healthcare and other aspects. However, this experience would be extremely useful for the specialists in the Republic of Moldova.

In the Republic of Moldova, every hour a person has a stroke, and every hour and a half a person dies from a stroke. Experts say that about 80% of strokes could be prevented. The statistics of the Republic of Moldova also show that, in 1995 there were 21 thousand people who had suffered a stroke, while in 2018 there were already 78 thousand people.

The Republic of Moldova was nominated host country for the first Summit of the IRENE - COST (Implementation Research Network in Stroke Quality) Project, which takes place on September 16-17, in Chisinau. In parallel, on September 17 and 18, the National Conference on cerebrovascular diseases will be held.
