Three police officers filmed extorting money at Chisinau airport

Three policemen of the Chisinau International Airport were detained after a hidden camera filmed them extorting money from passengers during about a month, Info-Prim Neo reports. In a news conference on May 31, Bogdan Zumbreanu, deputy head of the General Prosecution Division of the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime (CCCEC), said that early in May the Center received a complaint against the police officers of the Air Transport Police Commissariat. It said that some of them demand money from foreign citizens who enter or leave Moldova. The investigators established that the extorted sums varied between €20 and €500 and the illegal scheme had been used for several years. During a month, the hidden camera recorded about 50 such cases. Upon a search, the police seized 770 euros, 60 dollars, 40 Turkish lire and 10 Russian rubles. It is not known how much money the policemen extorted, but it will be established during the investigation, said Iurie Maximov, deputy head of the Ministry of the Interior's Investigations and Internal Security Division. Legal action was taken over passive corruption. An internal inquiry will be conducted in parallel. Vitalie Cebanu, division head at the CCCEC, said a foreigner was questioned and he said he had paid money at the airport since the first visit he made to Moldova six years ago. Two of the police officers are now held at the remand center of the CCCEC, while the third is in the hospital of the Ministry of the Interior and is guarded. They face 5 to 10 years in jail or fine of 20,000 to 60,000 lei.
