Three scanners for checking baggage will be soon delivered to the Customs Service. The equipment was donated by the U.S. Department of State through the EXBS (Export Control and Related Border Security) Program. The donation comes to complement another three scanners provided through the same program in 2012. Later, in December 2017, five mobile scanners were put back into operation with the assistance of the EXBS Program, IPN reports.
According to the director of the Customs Service Vitalie Vrabie, by its assistance programs, the United States became a reliable ally in diminishing the potential treats to economic and transfrontier security in the region and its support is vital for ensuring order and safety in the area.
The EXBS Program seeks to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and destabilizing accumulations and irresponsible transfers of conventional weapons by helping to build effective national strategic trade control systems in countries that possess, produce, or supply strategic items, as well as in countries through which such items are most likely to transit.
