A Rybintsa man, 30, cut his veins open in Penitentiary no.3 in Tiraspol in protest against the detention conditions and the inhumane treatment. Ion Manole, the president of the human rights organization Promo-LEX, has told Info-Prim Neo the inmate is currently in critical condition at the penitentiary's ward. He is one of the 6 inmates who sewed his mouth shut a couple of months ago as a form of protest. "The situation in the correctional facilities in the separatist region is a permanent concern for us. We will notify without delay the Moldovan Government, in particular Victor Osipov, the deputy prime-minister for reintegration; General Prosecutor Valeriu Zubco; ombudsman Anatolie Muntean, who is also the chairman of the Torture Prevention Mechanism; Health Minister Vladimir Hotineanu; and the Director of the Penitentiary Department Vadim Cojocaru", said Ion Manole. Manole thinks the Chisinau authorities should react and defend the rights of this detainee and visit the penitentiary to see his medical condition. Another inmate in the same penitentiary was on a hunger strike for similar reasons but had to renounce recently because of his deteriorating health. "Every day Promo-LEX receives letters from the relatives of the victims of the Tiraspol regime. We always notify the government in Chisinau, but it seems that these notifications do not reach the target or promises remain mere promises. We do not know the real reasons for the detention of those people. But we know that their presumption of innocence is violated”, said Ion Manole. He argued that, while the medical condition of many inmates is poor, the Tiraspol regime doesn't have enough drugs to treat them. Cells are overcrowded and sick inmates are not isolated, which amounts to dangerous incidence rates. Manole suggested the doors of the penitentiaries on the eastern side of the Nistru should be opened for the participants in the 5+2 negotiations.
