Traffic accidents claimed over 300 lives so far this year
More than 300 persons were killed and almost 3,000 injured in accidents that happened on the national roads so far this year. Gheorghe Botnariuc, the head of the Ministry of the Interior's Traffic Police Division, told a news conference on Tuesday that 45% of the accidents occur as a result of speeding. Driving under the influence is another frequent cause of accidents, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“The police cannot supervise all the traffic participants. Therefore, road safety depends greatly on the discipline of the drivers, passengers and pedestrians,” Gheorghe Botnariuc said.
A special operation called “Bahus” is carried out in Moldova during September 25 - October 24. It is aimed at reducing the number of DUI cases. As many as 455 such cases have been recorded during three weeks.
Gheorghe Botnariuc said a difficult period begins for traffic owing to the weather conditions. He reminded that all the drivers are obliged to travel with the lights on between November 1 and March 31, during the day as well.
