Traffic Police seek to toughen penalties for speeding
The Traffic Police proposed the Government to toughen penalties for speeding by making amendments to the Code of Administrative Offenses, Info-Prim Neo reports.
If the proposal goes through, exceeding the legal speed limit by 10-20km/h will be punished by a fine of 600 lei and 3 penalty points. The fine will be 800 lei and 4 penalty points, in addition to a 6 month suspension of the driving license, if the driver exceeds the legal speed by 20-40km/h. For an excess of 40km/h or more, the fine will go up to 1,000 lei and 5 penalty points, and one year-long suspension of the driving license.
The police noted that excessive speeds or speeds which are not adapted to specific road conditions are a leading cause of accidents. According to statistics, over 250 accidents occurred in 2012 because of speeding. 86 people were killed as a result of these accidents.
