Train catches fire in Ungheni

A passenger train running on the Ungheni-Balti route started to burn between the villages Cioropcani and Stolniceni villages of Ungheni district at about 6pm on July 7. Thirty passengers were evacuated, with the locomotive driver and his assistant being taken to the hospital.

Contacted by IPN for details, Balti Police Inspectorate press officer Eugenia Molchanov said the engine caught fire shortly after the train left the station in Cioropcani. The train was stopped immediately and the passengers from two cars were evacuated. As they inhaled fumes, the driver and his assistant were rushed by an ambulance to the hospital for medical care.

In a press release, the General Inspectorate for Emergencies sad the fire destroyed 80% of the locomotive. The firemen managed to prevent the fire from extending to cars.
