Two foreigners caught smuggling undeclared amounts and commemorative coins

Two foreign citizens tried to illegally take 118 commemorative coins and 15,200 U.S. dollars out of Moldova. They were thwarted in their attempts by border guards and customs inspectors at the Chisinau Interntional Airport, IPN reports.

Both of the cases happened last weekend. In the first case, a man with dual nationality tried to smuggle 118 commemorative and collection coins. He intended to fly by the Chisinau – Warsaw flight. The undeclared goods were detected in the baggage during a scan. The second investigated man is a Ukrainian citizen who intended to fly to Antalya. In his hand baggage, there was found a sum of US$15,200, which is higher than the admissible limit. The coins and currency were seized. The investigations go on.

On December 5, the border police and customs inspectors found 103 coins, an ingot and two medals in the hand baggie of a Moldovan citizen at the Leușeni customs post. The items weren’t declared to the customs authority. When being questioned, the man said the coins were purchased for €300 euros, while the ingot that is allegedly from gold was bought for €800. The goods were sized and can be confiscated based on a court decision.
