Two citizens of Moldova died last night when the car by which they travelled was struck by a train near the Romanian town Vaslui. Extrication teams were called to the scene to take the bodies out of the car, Agerpres Agency reported, quoted by IPN.
As a result of the collision, the driver and one of the female passengers died on the spot, while a teenage girl, who was on the back seat, suffered serious injuries. The girl was admitted to a hospital in Iasi, but her chances of survival are minimal.
Mihaela Straub, spokeswoman for the Vaslui County Police Inspectorate, said the driver of a Volvo car registered in Italy ignored the signals and stoplights at the railway crossing. Consequently, the vehicle was hit by a train running on the Iasi – Bucharest North route. The car was projected into another two vehicles parked nearby.
The police identified the victims. The driver, aged 40, and the passengers are native of Chisinau. The train involved in the accident didn’t stop at the scene, but in Vaslui station. After several dozen minutes, it continued its way.
