Two men were sentenced to terms of 25 and 19 years in jail for murder, robbery and fraud after found guilty of beating a woman to death with an ashtray and robbing her of a bottle of brandy, a kilo of chocolate, petty cash and a couple of medals, the Prosecutor Genertal's Office reported. Last July, one of the men learned from his former wife that a woman in Balti was regularly receiving money from her daughter in Italy. He convinced another man into robbing the woman. Armed with a metallic ashtray, they rang at the woman's door and pretending to be employees at the water facility requested to see the woman's water meters. When the victim opened the door, they delivered several blows with the ashtray and kicked her. The man sentenced to 25 years had been previously condemned for theft. The sentence is subject to appeal.
