University rectors support initiative to drop Bachelor's degree exams

The presidents of Moldovan universities support most of the legislative initiative to drop Bachelor's degree exams. Several of these rectors, contacted by Info-Prim Neo, stated that only the senior theses should be preserved. There are, however, rectors who claim that only fundamental discipline exams should be dropped, whereas the degree-affiliated exam and senior thesis should be preserved. [Grigore Belostecinic, Rector of the Academy of Economic Studies (ASEM),] pleads for preserving the senior thesis, and dropping the exams. “Students receive a certain amount of credits for the disciplines taken, which are then repeated in the graduation exam. In this sense, a doubling of efforts emerges. Last, but not least, there is the possibility of potential corruption cases that may happen during these exams”, stated the ASEM rector. Grigore Belostecinic said that the thesis could be left, because it allows students to prove their abilities, structure their knowledge and give out propositions. [Mihail Grosu, Senior Deputy Rector of “Ion Creanga” Pedagogical University,] mentioned that the university has been awaiting this initiative for a long while, since it has been submitting propositions to the Ministry of Education for eliminating these exams, as it is in Europe, where they only require a senior thesis. “The current exams are remnants of the old, Soviet Union system. They contradict the credits introduced according to the Bologna Process”, underlined the Senior Provost. [Gheorghe Cimpoies, Rector of the Agrarian University] also said that Bachelor's degree exams are disposable, yet the thesis should be mandatory. “The thesis should be kept, since at our university students do research, go out on fields”, said Gheorghe Cimpoies. Another [university rector, that of the Moldovan State University, Gheorghe Ciocanu,] stated that this initiative will be discussed at the National University Rectors Council, and a only then a final position on the matter will be given. However, the MSU will propose the presevation of the degree-affiliated exam, thus dropping only the general one. [Moldova Tech University (MTU) Provost Valentin Amariei] stated that MTU pleads for keeping the exams, since they test knowledge on the subjects studied. [Education Deputy Minister Loretta Handrabura,] told Info-Prim Neo that the Ministry's position on the matter will be made public after the National University Rectors Council. The Council will meet in the second half of October. The legislative initiative which proposes to drop the graduation exams, and substitute the senior thesis with a internship-based project, for the Bachelor's cycle of higher education, was proposed by the Liberal Party's parliamentary group.
