U.S. provides US$4m to Moldova to continue reforms

Moldova will receive US$4 million for activities carried out within programs concerning local government, rule of law, criminal justice, and law enforcement. U.S. Ambassador William H. Moser and Prime Minister Vlad Filat signed a series of amendments to previous assistance agreements to support these activities, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to a communiqué from the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau, the additional financing of US$360,000 to the rule of law program will help strengthen further the judicial system in Moldova, automate the judicial procedures, develop the institutional capacities and improve the anti-trafficking activities. US$500,000 of the financing of US$1.8 million for supporting the local government will be directed to the Moldovan NGOs for implementing projects to improve access to drinking water. The US$1.7 million intended for criminal justice and law enforcement programs will support the reform of the police and criminal justice and will strengthen the anti-trafficking activities. The U.S. Agency for International Development will coordinate the implementation of the rule of law and local government initiatives in cooperation with the Government of Moldova and national and international partners. The criminal justice and law enforcement activities will be managed by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.
