Use of Communist symbols punishable by up to 10,000 lei
The use of Communist symbols for political and propaganda purposes will carry fines of up to 10,000 lei, under a set of amendments to the Law on Political Parties proposed by the Liberals and adopted today with the vote of the parliamentary majority.
Fines for individuals range from 2,000 to 3,000 lei and for legal entities and persons in positions of authority from 6,000 to 10,000 lei.
Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu told reporters that the measure specifically bans the political use of Communist symbols and is not applicable in other cases. “The Communist Party remains, but their logo will have to go”, said Mihai Ghimpu. Other parties that would use Communist symbols would not be able to run in elections, as their participation will be banned by the Central Election Commission.
