Value of bank deposits grew by 22% in 2023

The value of bank deposits reached 113.396,6 billion lei at the end of last year, up by over 22% compared to the situation at the end of 2022. Most of the deposits were in national currency (63.4%). The information was communicated on Thursday by Nadejda Cornețel, head of the Management Board of the Bank Deposit Guarantee Fund, in the plenary sitting of Parliament, IPN reports.

The financial situation of the banking sector in 2023 was characterized by an increase in assets, loans, equity ratio, deposits of individuals and legal entities.

Covered deposits at the end of 2023 amounted to 29.509 billion lei, up 58% due to the significant increase in the level of coverage and also to the revision of the eligibility criteria for particular categories of depositors.

The year 2023 brought major changes in the framework that regulates the guaranteeing of bank deposits in the Republic of Moldova. These changes meant aligning with the provisions of the European regulatory framework and the best international practices in the field. With the entry into force of the new law on bank deposit guaranteeing, a new level of coverage in the amount of 100,000 lei was set. Starting with January 1, 2025, the level of coverage will be increased to 200,000 lei, said Nadejda Cornețel.

In the adopted decision, Parliament recommended that the Bank Deposit Guarantee Fund should ensure the working out of the secondary regulatory framework related to the deposit guarantee scheme and also that the performance of the guarantee scheme should be constantly assessed so as to maintain the population’s confidence and that the financial literacy of the population should be improved.
