Viorel Frunza: The deplorable state of the Moldovan football can change with the election of a new Federation president

“The biggest problem of our football is that it keeps getting worser and worser”, declared footballer Viorel Frunza at a news conference hosted by Info-Prim Neo on Monday. Frunza, a constant player of the Moldova national team, is sure that the deplorable state of the Moldovan football can change with the election of a new president at the Moldovan Football Federation, which would replace acting FMF president Pavel Cebanu. “Mr. Cebanu was absolutely right when he said that our football has been in a deep crisis for 18 years. After all, he's been holding the office for the last 12 years. I believe he has done nothing during his presidency. The level of football is progressively degrading. I think this is his fault and we all should try to do something for our football”, said Viorel Frunza. Frunza considers that the Moldovan football is facing numerous problems. “Nothing is done to support the football, there are no investments, no centers for the children are built, and football matches are hardly broadcast. The Moldovan premiership gets weaker and weaker every year”, he said. “There are no (football) schools for the kids, except Zimbru, and this is a big problem because when a kid eventually grows older he is not ready to play professional football. There are not many clubs that can offer proper conditions besides Zimbru. Most of them barely survive. The national team doesn't offer great conditions either. Outfits are outmoded, the squad travels long hours by bus, even on match day. There's no injury insurance from the federation”, Frunza added. The footballer thinks the FMF president missed some fine opportunities to find money and improve things. “There are money from the UEFA and it could be used to help the teams. Also, the federation could offer contracts to every footballer, with a monthly wage of $200. This would insure them if the clubs decide to terminate their contracts”. Frunza went on to add that he doesn't know how the federation uses the money invested by the UEFA in the Moldovan football: “I really don't know where this money is going, but it could be used to do something for the teams”. “If we keep Mr. Cebanu in office for 4 more years, we'll surely degrade even lower. A new person should come, to try to change the situation, to do something for the Moldovan football and move things forward. We need a change of mentality, a new turn of mind, like it happened with Russia's national team when they got Guus Hiddink”. Commenting on Cebanu's statements about the poor performance of the Moldova squad, Frunza said: “It's not what a worthy person would say. He should be the one to defend the players, and not slam them”. Pavel Cebanu has been serving as FMF president since 1997 and his term expires in mid February when elections for the next president are due.
