The Superior Council of Prosecutors accepted the Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo’s request to suspend Viorel Morari from the post of chief of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office until a definitive judgment is passed in the case featuring him, IPN reports.
After the request was examined behind closed doors, the Council’s president Angela Motuzoc said that it was decided to suspend Viorel Morari’s membership in the Board for the Selection and Career of Prosecutors. A copy of the decision will be sent to the prosecutor in charge of the case involving Morari and is to be attached to the criminal case.
Contacted by IPN for a comment, spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General’s Office Maria Vieru said that earlier the prosecutor general issued an order concerning the suspension of Viorel Morari given that legal action was taken against this. But a decision of the Superior Council of Prosecutors was needed to confirm the order.
On January 10, Viorel Morari was classed as a suspect and placed under arrest for 72 hours. He is suspected of illegally accepting a complaint from Vladimir Plahotniuc in March 2017, taking later legal action based on this and falsifying a number of documents. This PGO said this was done in his own interests and in the interests of the complainer and persons close to this so as protect them from investigation in the bank fraud case and to obstruct the swift, complete and objective examination of this case. Viorel Morari pleads not guilty.
