Volunteers Union: Independence was gained by the people, not parliamentarians

The members of the Republican Council of Volunteers Union of Moldova are upset about the Liberal-Democrats’ initiative to offer privileges to the members of the first Parliament (1990). In a statement, the Union disagrees with this initiative and, at the same time, requests the authorities to adopt a law granting special status to the volunteers who fought in the war on the Nistru, Info-Prim Neo reports. “For 20 years, our organizations petitioned all the governments and parliaments to adopt a law that would offer us, the volunteers in the war in 1992, a special status. No one ever answered our demands. We, the war volunteers, were surprised to hear about a group of MPs’ initiative to offer privileges to those who governed in 1990”, said Mihail Moroi, deputy head of the Anenii Noi territorial organization of the Volunteers Union. Mihail Moroi noted that the Declaration of Independence was adopted under the pressure of people, of over a million citizens who gathered in the Great National Assembly Square. The parliamentarians had no choice. “The signing of a declaration, be it of independence, isn’t something for which bonuses and privileges should be awarded. None of the former MPs or their children grabbed a gun to fight for the Independence of the motherland. On the contrary, they abused power and solved their own problems. Back in 1992, they promised us a law granting a special status to war volunteers, but didn’t keep their word”, said Moroi. “The parliamentarians know about the difficult situation of war volunteers over the last 20 years, but it seems they found the situation of the MPs who served in the first parliament worse than that of the injured, ill and disabled volunteers who lost their homes and jobs during the war on the Nistru River. That parliament did nothing for the war volunteers, although they were obliged to”, added Moroi. A legislative proposal on the volunteer's special status has been in the Parliament for 2 years, but is yet to be debated. If their requests aren’t heard, the volunteers threaten to protest all the fall.
