Vorniceni villagers demand Parliament to free their mayor
A group of people from Vorniceni village, Straseni district, protested in front of the Parliament Thursday demanding to release the mayor Gheorghe Ionel. The villagers say the police arrested the mayor – a member of the Moldova Noastra Alliance Party (AMN) – on suspicion of corruption, but the dossier would have been fabricated on commission. They also say his probe in custody is illegal.
An AMN local councilor Angheliu Vladimir has told Info-Prim Neo the mayor was arrested on September 3, suspected of illegally distributing plots of land. “Four masked policemen came with Kalashnikovs and six investigators in civil clothes. They searched the mayor's office without witnesses, as the people waiting to be received were scared,” Angheliu said.
According to the councilor, the reason of the arrest is the political affiliation of the mayor. “We have come to the Parliament to ask for the immediate release of the mayor and for punishing the prosecutors, investigators who fabricated the case. We're indignant. We imagine there is no justice at all in this state, no Parliament, no Government, no Presidency,” Vladimir Angheliu stated.
The protesting villagers say they love their mayor, and their manifestation is just a warning. “Unless the mayor is set free immediately, the whole village will come, 5,600 people, to protest in Chisinau,” one of the protesters has vowed.
AMN parliamentarian Veaceslav Untila, proposed the Parliament to set up a commission to investigate the police's actions. But the proposal was culled by the majority of MPs.
