The walnut producers said the price of walnut kernel will not change, especially the export one, even if the crop this year is lower than last year. Constantin Gajim, executive director of the Union of Associations of Walnut Producers, has told IPN that the severe winters and the drought of the last two years affected the trees and the harvest is smaller.
“The walnuts haven’t yet recovered. The yield of Moldovan walnuts is lower, while of French walnuts is higher. But there are more orchards with Moldova sorts of walnuts in our country,” stated Constantin Gajim.
He added that the price of walnut kernel will not rise. “We depend on the European market and they will not offer more than until now. The price may increase slightly on the home market, but the exporters mainly maintain the prices,” said Constantin Gajim.
In the announcements on sale and purchase websites, a kilogram of walnuts costs about 12 lei, while of walnut kernel of a high quality – 100 lei and more.
