Besides warning words, the cigarette packets will also contain soon pictograms that will represent the effects of smoking on health. Vice director of the National Health Center Ion Salaru has told Info-Prim Neo that the action forms part of the national tobacco control program.
“There will be included warning pictures designed to convince the people to give up smoking,” Ion Salaru said, adding that the law should be modified as it does not make the pictograms compulsory elements.
Ion Salaru said that negotiations are conducted with the European Union for the provision of pictograms. The EU may give Moldova about 75 pictograms that will be used on cigarette packs in rotation.
According to Salaru, the legislation on tobacco contains shortcomings. “The cigarettes with aromas will be restricted in the not too distant future as they are mainly intended for young people and are designed to attract new users,” he stated.
The excise duties on tobacco may be raised so that the tobacco products are not so accessible. Besides, these duties in Moldova are among the lowest in the world, the National Health Center’s vice director said.
“This year, we will make a study as part of two global studies. We will analyze the incidence of smoking in 50 Moldovan schools - 25 in Chisinau and 25 outside Chisinau - and three medicine colleges. This is the battalion that we hope will promote a healthy lifestyle in the future,” said Ion Salaru.
According to the Ministry of Health, every tenth death among adults worldwide is attributable to tobacco use. Around 100 million people died because of tobacco use in the 20th century. 10 years of life are robbed from smokers because they die 10 years earlier than nonsmokers
