Over 75% of the wells in the Republic of Moldova have contaminated water, but in some districts, such as Rezina, Călărași, Căușeni, Ștefan Vodă, and Basarabeasca, the situation is much more serious – over 90% of the sources do not meet the sanitary standards. According to the National Public Health Agency, contamination with nitrates - substances that can affect people's health – is the main cause of pollution, IPN reports, with reference to radiomoldova.md.

More than 33,000 public wells are officially registered in the Republic of Moldova. If the private ones are included, the total number exceeds 45,000. Of these, only 10% were subjected to chemical tests, which are carried out every three years. The results show that only a quarter of them are compliant, while the rest exceed the permissible limits. In addition to nitrate contamination, microbiological analyses in 9% of the wells showed that every quarter contains bacteria above the norm.

Among the main factors that lead to water pollution are the absence of sewerage systems in villages, placing of toilets near wells, poor management of garbage cans and waste from livestock farms, excess of fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture. Floods also aggravate the situation, transporting pollutants into groundwater.

The authorities emphasize that all the checked wells must have posters indicating the results of the analyses. If this information is missing, the water should not be drunk. The National Public Health Agency warns the population to use water from safe sources - centralized networks or bottled wate, - especially in areas where wells were declared non-compliant. To prevent contamination, it is recommended to regularly maintain the wells and the areas around them. If symptoms of poisoning appear after drinking water, the people are advised to see a doctor.
