We must prove that Moldova deserves being in Europe, central bank governor
The attempts to appropriate bank shares seriously affected Moldova’s image abroad, as well as the individual perception of the potential investors from the European countries, the governor of the National Bank of Moldova Dorin Dragutanu said in a meeting of the EU Press Club in Chisinau, Info-Prim Neo reports.
”The country’s image can be shortly restored by concerted diplomatic effort, but it is hard to reach those potential French, German and Austrian investors and convince them that the situation in Moldova is under control and they can come to do business here,” said Dorin Dragutanu.
According to the governor, the foreign investors coming to this part of Europe do not expect to find institutions as in the EU countries with democratic traditions. They know that they come to a problematic area. The companies willing to expand employ many Moldovans because they want to understand better what’s going on and realize the risks so as to see if it’s worth the effort.
Dorin Dragutanu said the raider attacks helped the political class, civil society and the press realize the seriousness of the problems encountered in the judicial system. “A court decision can affect not only an ordinary person or a group of persons, but also the state budget, the taxpayers’ money and the entire society. If we realize this thing, after light is shed on these cases and those to blame are penalized, we will and will have the chance of being understood in Europe. If not, it will be a signal that we are not ready to integrate into the civilized world and will be ignored,” said the governor.
He also said it is good that the people did not hurry to withdraw their money from banks and did not take steps that might have worsened the situation in the banking system. “The clients of the banks had an exemplary behavior in the period and this shows that they no longer believe any disseminated information. The people analyze the situation first to see what’s happening and then take a decision,” said Dorin Dragutanu.
