Wheat flour will be enriched with iron and folic acid gradually

From January 1, 2015, all the wheat flour used in the food industry will be enriched with iron and folic acid. The enrichment of the flour with these components is stipulated in the national program for combating diseases caused by iron and folic acid deficiency. In order to give a period of transition to the economic entities, the council that is coordinating the given program decided that the flour will be enriched gradually, in three stages, from December 1, 2013, IPN reports.

The companies selling locally made and imported flour will be obliged to indicate on the label that the product was enriched with iron and folic acid. Doctors established that an increasing number of babies are born with malformations due to the deficiency of these elements, while the women suffer from anemia.
