A woman from Ialoveni district whom the Moldovan authorities put on the wanted list for trafficking six Moldovan women to Turkey was arrested in Greece and extradited to Moldova for being held accountable. The criminal case started against the woman was sent to court, IPN reports.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the woman in 2014 – 2016, promising them well-paid jobs, recruited seven young women from socially-deprived families, among whom a girl younger than 18, and obliged them to prostitute themselves in Turkey. The sexual services were provided in an apartment in Istanbul and the profits were fully collected by the woman, the victims being paid only a small part. When they returned home, the victims filed complaints and legal action was taken in this case.
Under the Moldovan legislation, trafficking in human beings and children carries a penalty of at most 20 years in jail. If the woman is found guilty, she will also pay the extradition-related costs of 33,000 lei.
As many as 312 offenses of trafficking in persons and related crimes were recorded last year. A number of 144 cases started over such offenses were sent to court and 130 sentences against 190 culprits were passed in these.
