Women at Rusca prison complain their children remained home alone

The women held at Penitentiary No. 7 in Rusca complained to the ombudswoman for children's rights Tamara Plamadeala that when the court passed judgments in their cases the judges and prosecutors did not ask them if they have minor children at home, but the lawyers also did not intervene to make sure that their children do not remain alone. Recently, Tamara Plamadeala paid a monitoring visit to Rusca and intends to prepare a report and ask the authorities to intervene, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The state must take measures to supervise these children and take care of them when a sentence is pronounced. The judge must notify the competent bodies so that the children who do not have where to go or with whom to stay are supervised. If they do not have relatives, the tutelage authorities must take steps to institutionalize these children,” Plamadeala said. Tamara Plamadeala spoke about cases when children whose mothers were imprisoned started to beg. The jailed mothers often do not know what will happen to their children. “Nobody took attitude and looked back to see those children walking through the corridors of the courts of law,” she said. She also said that the convicted mothers want more lenient sentences such a fines or community service so that they can be near their children and take care of them. According to Tamara Plamadeala, the lawyers are also to blame for such a situation as they provide services of a poor quality, delay the hearings, but ask larges sums of money.
