A mission of the World Bank came to Chisinau to provide consultancy in formulating the forestry policy of Moldova. According to a communiqué from “Moldsilva” Forestry Agency, the World Bank mission is led by Andrew Mitchell, senior specialist in forestry, IPN reports.
Andrew Mitchell said the World Bank classed the forestry sector as an important one on its list of priorities and forestry policies should be worked out in order to establish cooperation relations with foreign partners. A series of actions will be suggested for strengthening the forestry sector and solving certain problems with the help of the recommended measures.
“Moldsilva” director general Stefan Chitoroaga referred to such priorities as the creation of a forestry personnel training center, extension of the wooded areas in Moldova, carrying out of studies to determine the consequences of climate change for forests.
The World Bank supports financially a number of projects in Moldova’s forestry sector, including “Moldova Community Forestry Development”, “Moldova Soil Conservation”, and “Moldova Community Support Program for Sustainable and Integrated Forest Management and Carbon Sequestration through Forestation”.
