Young man caught smuggling precious metals worth 1.5m lei

A young man was caught at the Leușeni customs post with precious metals, including medals, coins and a yellow ingot, to the value of over 1.5 million lei. They were hidden in his personal bag and weren’t declared to the customs authority. Law enforcement officers carried out searches in this case of smuggling, IPN reports.

According to the Customs Service, during the investigation measures, the 37-year-old man communicated several versions about the origin of the goods, but also about the purpose of their introduction into the country, all versions being different and raising questions.

Investigating officers searched the suspect’s home and other premises, where they seized items believed to be gold and also information carriers.

At this stage, the man is being investigated as a suspect without being remanded in custody.
