A young man with a criminal record, who was also convicted of swindle, was remanded in custody for influence peddling. He asked 22,000 lei from a woman for helping her solve a case at the Appeals Court, IPN reports, quoting the National Anticorruption Center.

According to the denouncer, at the end of 2020 the man offered his assistance in obtaining a favorable decision in a case in which the woman was the injured party. In that case, the culprit was punished only administratively and the woman could not obtain compensations for damage caused by this. The man told her he has relatives in the panel of judges that was to try the case and can persuade them, in exchange for €600, to criminally punish the culprit so that she could claim damages.

The Appeals Court offered the woman the possibility of recovering only a part of the damages and she went again to the man. This told her that the case is to be examined at the Supreme Court of Justice and she should pay another €500 for a favorable decision there. Later, the suspect asked €200 in recompense for his intermediation services, which he received in kind. The total sum he received was estimated at 22,000 lei, while the received goods were assessed at about 1,000 lei.

The man faces a maximum jail term of six years.
