Youth numbers in Moldova are dropping

The young generation in Moldova is decreasing steadily, especially the 15-19 age group, whose share in the total number of youth dropped from 31.8% in 2009 to 26% in 2014. As of January 1, 2014, young people aged between 15 and 29 represent 25% of the total population, IPN learned from the National Statistics Bureau.

Among youth, the share of those aged 20-24 decreased by 2.3% to 34.5%. Meanwhile, the percentage of Moldovans aged 25-29 rose by 8.2% to reach 39.5% of all youth.

The birth rate remains low and the death rate high. Nonetheless, the number of births has slightly increased in recent years. In 2013, the total fertility rate was 124 children to 100 women. Still, the birth rate is 40% lower than the level necessary merely for the numerical replenishment of the current population.

Women under 30 years of age provide 74% of births. The average age of women at the first birth is 23.9 years.

About 24,400 couples married in 2013, with 68.7% of the newly-weds aged between 16 and 29. The men's average age at the first marriage is 26 and the women's 23. The share of first weddings in the age group 16-29 is for the first time decreasing, especially the number of early weddings at 16-19 years of age.

The number of settled divorces last year was 10,800. Over the last 5 years, the frequency of such cases has been on the drop.
