The editorial staffs of the newspapers “Ziarul de Garda” (“ZdG”) and “Timpul de dimineata” Thursday picketed the Prosecutor General’s Office, demanding that they speedily investigate the case of the publication of the fake papers “Ziarul de Chisinau” and “Timpul de Chisinau” and inform the public who ordered and paid for the denigrating and discrediting materials, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“We demand two very simple things that are in accordance with the law – to hasten the examination of the case so that the names of those behind this act are made public by June 5, and to withdraw them from the electoral race if it is an electoral act,” said the director of “Timpul de dimineata” Constantin Tanase.
According to Tanase, it is grave when the newspapermen have to take to the streets as this shows that the state institutions encounter functioning problems and the legal system is not working. He also said that the spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior suggested that an election runner was behind those fake newspapers.
“We want the electoral candidate who ordered this campaign to discredit the independent press to be identified and excluded from the electoral race. If this candidate is not withdrawn, we will be free to interpret that the authorities protect and support him in these denigrating acts,” said editor-in-chief of “ZdG” Aneta Grosu.
She also said that if the investigation is not completed by the end of the election campaign, the editorial staff will continue to protest and will demand 500,000 lei in damages.
The two imitations of “Ziarul de Garda” and “Timpul de dimineata” contained materials that denigrated Victor Bodiu and Dorin Chirtoaca.
The police arrested two suspects in this case, but they were later released and banned from leaving the country.
