Gross external debt up almost 1 percent in 2024

Moldova's gross external debt increased by 0.9 percent last year to US$10.2 billion on December 31, which is 56.1 percent of the Gross Domestic Product, IPN reports.

According to provisional data of the National Bank of Moldova, the public external debt accounted for 42.2% of the total external debt and amounted to US$4.3 billion (+12.8% since the beginning of the year). The private external debt totaled US$5.9 billion, down 6.3% compared to December 31, 2023.

"The main indicators related to the external debt reveal the advantage of external financing, its efficiency being reflected by the low values of the average quarterly interest rates that were historically maintained at practically constant values," said the central bank.

At the end of the fourth quarter of 2024, the main creditor of the state was the International Monetary Fund with a share of 31.7% in the total public debt (US$1.3 billion), followed by the World Bank Group with 25.2% or more than US$1 billion, (in which the debt to the International Development Association amounted to more than US $793 million and the debt to the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development to more than US$292 million), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development with 10.6% (US$455.69 million) and the European Investment Bank with 10.5% (US $453.45 million).
