Acacia honey could rise in price due to deficit

Acacia honey could rise in price due to a deficit on the market. Head of the National Beekeepers Association Stefan Condratiuc told Info-Prim Neo that the acacias blossomed three weeks earlier this year, while the biological cycle of bees is fixed and they didn’t react in time. Stefan Condratiuc doesn’t remember another year when acacias blossomed when the bees weren’t ready for collecting honey. This spring, beekeepers obtained three times less honey than last year. They hope to gather more from sunflower, linden and other flowers, or otherwise rises in price are inevitable. “People from Greece asked us for honey. Our partners from Hungary also report a deficit”, said the head of the Beekeepers Association. According to him, in previous years bees collected honey from colza flowers to feed the families. However, because of the drought, the colza fields have been plowed again and the situation is more difficult. Stefan Condratiuc remarked that honey is the only animal-origin product exported by Moldova in the EU. The prices continue to grow on the European market, especially for acacia honey. Two beekeepers from Floresti district told Info-Prim Neo that they have considerable reserves from last years, which might ameliorate the situation. They wait for a good price to sell. The Association leader confirmed that last year was a rich one, and many beekeepers obtained more honey that they didn’t manage to sell. Moldova has over 4000 beekeepers and the producer’s price of 1 kg of honey is about 40-50 lei.
