AEI will set date of new presidential elections by yearend

The Alliance for European Integration (AEI) will set the date of the new presidential elections by the end of this year, the chairman of the Democratic Party Marian Lupu said after the meeting of the AEI Council on December 21, Info-Prim Neo reports. Under the legislation, the elections are held within 30 days of the first failed attempt to elect the head of state. Marian Lupu said the discussions will be continued within the alliance and they will hold negotiations with the Communist opposition as well. In accordance with the AEI agreement, Marian Lupu is the alliance’s candidate for the presidency, the Liberal-Democratic leader Vlad Filat told the press after the meeting. The setting of the day of the new elections remains a major issue, said the first deputy head of the Liberal Party Ion Hadirca. The leaders of the AEI also spoke about Communist leader Vladimir Voronin’s conditions. He said the Communist MPs will take part in the presidential elections if the ruling alliance is liquidated and a new government is formed. “The goal is evident – to cause a serious conflict in the AEI so as to provoke early elections,” said Vlad Filat, reminding that the three member parties of the AEI signed a document, pledging not to form coalitions with the PCRM.
