The April 7, 2009 events had been decisive in the initiation of irreversible processes aimed at returning things in Moldova to normality. The Alliance for European Integration 1 and 2 wouldn’t have existed without April 7, 2009 and Moldova wouldn’t have been taken out of the international isolation and wouldn’t have had a clear pro-European course, the leader of the Liberal-Democratic parliamentary group Valeriu Strelet has told Info-Prim Neo.
The MP said the then events were a sincere and spontaneous revolt of a generation that lo longer wanted to live in an isolated and poor country ruled by a totalitarian regime. “Most probably, it was also a manipulation of the energy of the masses by those who aimed to make serious accusations and humiliate the democratic political forces by devastating the official buildings. It was a remarkable example of involvement and sacrifice of the young people who wanted a democratic, civilized, prosperous and European country,” stated Valeriu Strelet.
He also said that not all the prospects opened after July 29, 2009 were yet fully used. “The performance of the prosecution bodies and the law enforcement bodies is regretful and questionable as they did not manage to identify those who escalated the violence that day. The court decisions acquitting Papuc and Botnari (Minister of the Interior Gheorghe Papuc and Commissioner General of Chisinau Vladimir Botnari in April 2009 – e.n.) are also open to discussion,” said Valeriu Strelet.
However, the lawmaker considers that the Moldovans also benefited from those events as the democratic political forces after April 7 made firm commitments not to allow the Communists to return to power as they prevented Moldova from developing and modernizing during eight years.
“Among other positive consequences after July 29 (when the legislative elections were rerun and after which the AEI 1 was formed – e.n.) were the prevention of the collapse of the 2009 budget, which had an enormous deficit in autumn, the international openness and taking of Moldova out of the diplomatic isolation, the irreversible pro-European course and the authentic freedom of expression,” stated the leader of the Liberal-Democratic group.
According to Valeriu Strelet, the most significant and irrecoverable losses sustained during the 2009 events was the death of Valeriu Boboc and the suffering of the young people who were maltreated in police commissariats. The Parliament and Presidential Buildings destroyed on April 7 have not been yet repaired, but this loss is recoverable and the given situation will be remedied the next months.
