Alexandru Tanase: To postpone local elections, legislation should be amended

The president of the Constitutional Court Alexandru Tanase said the local elections can be postponed only after amending the legislation. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, Tanase commented on some politicians’ statements that the local elections could be postponed until next year, IPN reports.

“This subject, which causes contradictory debates, could reach the Constitutional Court. Consequently, I can say that I fully subscribe to the opinion stated by the president of the Central Election Commission, which is the election date can be postponed after amending the law,” stated Alexandru Tanase.

He noted that in the case of local elections, the law does not specify a time limit for holding them. “If there is a political intention to put off the elections, the legislation must be modified. But in this case, there are also subtleties related to the extension of the term in office of the local elected officials and this matter is already within the competence of the Constitutional Court. We will see what changes will be made and to what extent this term will be extended,” said the judge.

Alexandru Tanase considers the territorial-administrative reform can be done until the term of the local elected officials expires so as not to extend this term and not to rearrange the local elections.

Earlier, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party Vlad Filat said the local elections could be postponed until next year given that the territorial-administrative reform must be done before the elections.
