Authorities looking for place for monument to Grigore Vieru
The monument representing the late poet Grigore Vieru cannot be placed on the boulevard that bears his name because it does not fit the local urbanistic aspect. The decision was taken in the meeting of the Union of Architects, which proposed locating the sculpture at the Central Cemetery on Armeneasca St, where the poet was buried, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Deputy mayor Nistor Grozavu said the monument is great and should be placed in a square. “There is not much space at the entrance to Rascani district. Most of the members of the Union of Architects said that the sculpture should be better put in a cemetery, even if it’s too high. They agreed unanimously that the sculpture is not urban,” said Nistor Grozavu. According to him, even if a decision to place the sculpture in the Central Cemetery is taken, the contest for designing the memorial complex “Grigore Vieru” will be continued and greater freedom will be granted as to where the monument will be placed.
Mayor General Dorin Chirtoaca said that he wants to avoid unpleasant situations concerning Grigore Vieru at any costs and the only solution is to present schemes for locating the monument both in the cemetery and in the city. “Evidently, the decision will be taken by the family. The poet belongs to the whole nation. It is right to allow everyone to state their opinions, but in a civilized way,” he stated.
The monument made by sculptor Constantin Constantinov is three meters in height and represents the poet standing near a tree. In the upper part, the tree has a cross. The sculpture is made from bronze and cost over 1 million lei.
