Balti on par with Chisinau

Balti Municipality has obtained the status of second level territorial-administrative unit, like Chisinau. Parliament adopted in two readings a Bill to this effect proposed by Liberal-Democratic MP Tudor Deliu, Info-Prim Neo reports. He said this would ensure a better functioning of municipal authorities for solving local problems and providing the inhabitants of the Balti Municipality with quality public services. According to Tudor Deliu, the law is meant to repair a mistake committed in 2001, when Balti obtained the status of first level administrative-territorial unit. After the changes come into effect, the public administration of the Balti Municipality will be taken care of by the municipal council and suburban councils as deliberative authorities, and by the general mayor and suburban mayors as executive authorities. Besides, the Balti Municipal Council can meet in case of urgent problems or whenever necessary, summoned by the Mayor or by at least a third of the elected councilors. On July 26, the Balti local elected officials initiated a referendum for enlarging the autonomy of the municipality. Subsequently, the Government approved Deliu's bill.
